This vs That: Holiday Gift decisions you need to make

This vs That: Holiday Gift decisions you need to make

Gifting decisions during the holidays are difficult, and so is asking for the right gadget when you’re on the receiving end. There always seem to be two (or more) gadgets to choose between.

Do you get an iPhone or an Android this year? Which AI speaker path do travel down for the rest of your life, Amazon Echo Dot with Alexa or Google Home Mini with Google Assistant? Are you going to be playing Nintendo games for the next four years or become a PlayStation gamer?

These are the questions that make or break a good wish list for the holidays. That’s why we’ve put together a this vs that comparison in order to direct you to the right product for you.

Let the gadget duel begin.

iPhone X vs Samsung Galaxy S8

5.8-inch screens are the rage right now, with both Apple and Samsung pining to get you to buy into their redesigned flagship phones. It’s easy to like both, thanks to their tall, expansive screens that have a nearly bezel-free face. It looks like the future.

What it comes down to: Do you like iOS 11 or prefer Android Nougat? Losing Apple’s iMessage by switching to Android remains a problem, so that could sway you. On the other hand, Samsung’s phone is cheaper and has a headphone jack and a fingerprint sensor. Granted the sensor is on the back and in an awkward spot. In this case, past features may determine your future phone.

Amazon Echo Dot vs Google Home Mini

Amazon and Google are in an AI war and also a price war right now. They’re doing everything in their power to sway you to their flavor of a smart assistant inside your home. Both can play music, control your lights and answer questions.

What it comes down to: Amazon’s Alexa assistant the Google Assistant are becoming more alike everyday. Alexa can do more right now, but Google’s deeper into machine learning and leveraging its search data to enhance Google Home and predict what you want to know. Right now, we like the Echo Dot, but that can easily change in 2018.

Fitbit Ionic vs Apple Watch Series 3

Fitbit makes a true smartwatch now, and it still has excellent activity tracking chops to go head-to-head with the brand new Apple Watch 3. They both receive your smartphone notifications, track your daily steps and even have contactless payment chips inside. Fitbit and Apple are clearly going after the same people.

What it comes down to: The first thing you will notice is that Fitbit Ionic is cheaper than the Apple Watch 3. But the price difference isn’t that big. Apple Watch is faster, brighter and has a better, refined interface thanks to watchOS 4. Fitbit has the leg up in putting your activity tracking at the forefront.

iPad Pro 10.5-inch vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

Apple and Samsung make the best tablets and they had two new flagships in 2017. Both the iPad Pro 10.5-inch and 9.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 offer nearly the same sized beautiful screen for watching movies and staying productive with a stylus (an Apple Pencil or an S Pen).

What it comes down to: Apple has the best tablet app selection, meaning the Samsung tablet suffers because Android apps much of the operating system isn’t built for a tablet in mind. But we still like Samsung’s screen and speakers just as much as the iPad Pro and it costs less. If you’re willing to spend more, though, go with an Apple tablet of any size.

Nintendo Switch vs PS4

Nintendo and Sony have the two most popular video game consoles in 2017, and that means you have a tough decision to make. You’re unlikely going to buy both at once, and they cost nearly the same amount of money to buy.

What it comes down to: Nintendo Switch is our favorite because it’s portable (though not pocketable) and it has games like Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Nintendo hits won’t stop coming in 2018. Sony’s system leads in power and mature games, including Call of Duty WW2 and Star Wars Battlefront 2. And it’s more likely to get the next Grand Theft Auto and other titles that demand better performance. It all comes down to video game preference in our minds.

MacBook Pro vs Dell XPS 13

Dell has delivered our favorite 13-inch laptop two years running, but many people prefer macOS and that’s an Apple-only affair. You’re going to need a MacBook for that and a whole lot more money. Both laptops come in 15-inch configurations, too.

What it comes down to: Are you bent on running Windows 10 or macOS, and are you willing to pay extra money for the latter? Both have a slick design, but the Apple TouchBar does little and we think the Dell laptop has a more modern look to it. It’s more for your money.

iPhone X answered: New Android phones will get ‘deep portrait’ and Face ID

iPhone X answered: New Android phones will get ‘deep portrait’ and Face ID

The iPhone X has been out for a little more than a month and there are already plans to replicate its most unique features in high-end 2018 Android phones.

‘Deep portrait’ selfie photography and Face ID and Unlock will be supported by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset, which is likely to be in a majority of top Android phones next year.

This will enable bokeh-rich portrait photos from the selfie camera, which we’ve mainly seen on rear-facing cameras among Android phones. Blurring the background in your subject-focused selfies is much more compelling than selfie beauty mode and skin smoothing, which almost blurs… you.

And while Android handsets have had a primitive version of Face ID and Unlock, Qualcomm’s solution is being touted as a way to match Apple’s TrueDepth front-facing camera. It all needs to start at the System-on-a-Chip level.

We don’t know which phones will support the Snapdragon 845 chipset, and in turn support deep portrait selfies and Face ID, but almost all major phone makers did have the Snapdragon 835 chipset at the core of their hardware. The Samsung Galaxy S9 may be the first with the new 10nm silicon.

Ready for Android Animoji?

You can also expect to see more 3D face mapping on Android phones to match what we’ve seen from Apple’s Animoji feature.

Qualcomm’s new chipset has active depth sensing and support IR sensors for face mapping. The company also talked up the security of its chip, noting that face mapping security is of the utmost importance.

The Huawei-made Honor View 10 is already attempting to clone Animoji, but having the architecture in place on the chip is vital to improving performance and adoption of the next-generation of front-facing camera features.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 845: everything you need to known about the flagship phone chip

Qualcomm Snapdragon 845: everything you need to known about the flagship phone chip

The Snapdragon 845 chipset has been officially unveiled, and it’s expected to feature in some of the biggest Android flagship smartphones in 2018.

It’s not just phones that the chip is destined for though, with it likely to find its way into tablets, laptops and VR headsets over the course of the next 12 months.

We’ve broken down all the detail to bring you everything you need to know about this next generation chipset that will set the scene for 2018’s smartphones.

Incredible HDR video and upgraded camera

Your next smartphone won’t just be able to display brilliant-looking HDR video, it will be skilled at recording in HDR, too, Qualcomm announced today.

For that reason alone, the new Snapdragon 845 chipset, which debuted at the company’s annual tech summit in Hawaii, is enough to make us excited for the best Android phones to come in 2018.

Starting with a completely redesigned image sensor processor, the chipset is poised to pave the way for giving users the power to capture HDR footage on a phone camera. It can also record 4K Ultra HD at 60 frames per second.

“The videos you capture are going to e more lifelike than they were before,” said Tim Leland, Qualcomm Vice President of Product Management. We’re going to see an increase in the quality of pixels, not just the quantity of pixels.

Just like the Snapdragon 800 was the first to capture 4K video in 2013, the 845 is going to be the first to have a sensor that soaks up 64 times the color data compared to standard sensors, going from 8 bits to 10 bits of color.

That’s what gives HDR content so much “pop” and you’ll be able to see the difference for yourself in 2018.

Qualcomm says it has substantially improved its algorithms, added multi-frame noise reduction and video at 720 in HD10 for 480 frames per second for slow motion video.

ImMotion, something we haven’t seen before, will allow future smartphone cameras users to capture a mix of moving video and pause portions of the scene. Qualcomm illustrated this with a motionless girl staring at her goldfish moving about a bowl. The user will be able to edit thanks to new post-processing powers.

Why this is such a big deal

There are already smartphone screens that can show HDR Premium content, which, at the size of a smartphone is more important than the jump to a 4K resolution. You don’t have to look far to find a device with an HDR-ready display – the LG G6, LG V30, Google Pixel 2 XL and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 are all fine candidates.

The problem is that we’ve all been recording video without HDR, not making use of top-end phones with their equally top-end HDR displays, or our new HDR-ready televisions.

However, the new phones will change that. Equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, a huge wave of HDR content is about to wash over, changing both the ways in which people can capture HDR video and view it.

What else can the Snapdragon 845 do?

You can also expect power advancements and battery life savings from the new chipset. Additionally, it’ll push high resolution depth-sensing in cameras that it powers, offering a three-fold performance boost compared in graphics compared to last year’s phones – yet it will require 30 times less power. That’s a big deal for Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality.

The new Qualcomm chipset comes down to five pillars: immersion, AI, security, connectivity and performance.

When will we see the first Snapdragon 845 phones?

We don’t have a firm release date for phones powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset yet, with Qualcomm saying that it expects the first devices to appear “in the first half of 2018.”

However when pushed, Qualcomm’s SVP of its mobile business, Alex Katouzian told us that we’ll “probably see announcements at MWC 2018“, which takes place at the end of February.

As for when those handsets will actually be available to buy, it’s likely to be sometime around March/April 2018.

However, since Samsung is still fabricating the chip, we may see it in the Samsung Galaxy S9, a phone that’s rumored to be teased at CES 2018. After that, expect adoption to catch on like wildfire.

iOS 11 and iOS 11.2 features and updates

iOS 11 and iOS 11.2 features and updates

The iOS 11.1 update is now available for your iPhone and iPad, and Apple is now testing iOS 11.2 beta for developers this week. The changes keep on coming.

This is on top of the iOS 11 features that gave us a big refresh, even if there are minor, but irritating iOS 11 problems for some.

It’s a big deal even if you’re not upgrading to iPhone X or iPhone 8. Your device may feel like new thanks to several user interface changes and fresh features.

So what’s iOS 11.1 like? Is it worth downloading? And is it bug-free enough for you to do so? Below you’ll find our thoughts on every major iOS 11 feature.

(Update: Apple is trekking ahead with update 11.2, bringing fast charging, some bugs fixes and, most notably, Apple Pay Cash, to users. The Verge notes that the latter is beginning its slow roll-out, but you won’t have to wait long to start paying your friends and family within iMessage. Stay tuned for an in-depth look at what else the latest update offers up.)

iOS 11.1 release date and features

  • iOS 11.1 is here with over 100 new emoji
  • Only users with iOS 11.1 can send and receive them
  • Still waiting on Apple Pay Cash and iMessage in iCloud

As of today, your iPhone and iPad can update to iOS 11.1, but developers and are already testing the future of Apple’s software with iOS 11.2 beta.

iOS 11.1 launched on Tuesday, October 31, directly ahead of Friday’s iPhone X release date. It’s a natural time to make sweeping changes to the mobile OS.

What changes? The big highlight are the new iOS 11.1 emoji. There a hundred new or changed emoji you can send (or receive) if you make the update. Note: they won’t show up properly for anyone running iOS 10.0.3 or below.

iOS 11.1 doesn’t include Apple Pay Cash or iMessages stores in iCloud, but we’re also expecting these features eventually, We do get several iOS 11 bug fixes.

These new features may wait until iOS 11.2, which Apple is testing. It’s only been since Tuesday, September 19 that iOS 11 first became available to the public.

iOS 11 features exclusive to iPhone X, iPhone 8

iOS 11 includes a couple of iPhone X-exclusive features that you won’t find on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, or older handsets.

Apple is combining emoji with animations, and it takes advantage of the iPhone X’s 3D face-scanning TrueDepth camera array. The result is Animoji, which tracks the muscles in your face to animate the emoji. All of your Messages texts will benefit (or suffer, depending on your view of expressive emoji).

Face ID and home-button-replacing gesture-swiping will also be an iPhone X-only feature. Face ID replaces Touch ID as a biometric sensor, and it’s going to take time for people to learn how iOS 11 replaces the home button on the new flagship Apple phone.

Portrait Lighting, also available on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, is an option Apple has added to its existing background-blurring Portrait Mode photos. It uses the dual-lens depth-sensing camera and machine learning to simulate a range of lighting effects: Contour Light, Natural Light, Stage Light, Stage Light Mono, and Studio Light.

Watch our video below to learn all about the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

How iOS 11 changes your current iPhone and iPad

iOS is an especially big upgrade for the iPad, which can now be considered a more viable laptop replacement thanks to revamped iOS multitasking. Both the iPad and iPhone get a much-needed Control Center reorganization too.

Apple Pay will support peer-to-peer money transfer, there are new camera modes, Siri is smarter, and iOS 11 (finally) thrusts Apple to the forefront of augmented reality innovation with ARKit.

Here the highlights of iOS 11 beta, and how it’ll enhance your existing iPhone and iPad experience.

New multi-tasking grid view with a redesigned Control Center

iOS 11 dock makes iPad multitasking easy

The new iPad Pro 10.5 and iPad Pro 12.9 are becoming laptop replacements for many people, and iOS 11 makes that a reality thanks to improved multitasking.

iOS 11 includes a dock just like a Mac computer, and it follows you from app-to-app along the bottom. It’s hidden, but you can always swipe up to access it.

The bottom app dock also shows up in the multitasking menu, which is now laid out in a grid. It’s easier to jump between apps now, just like on any MacBook.

TechRadar’s take: This is the most important iOS 11 change if you own a newer iPad. We found that the new dock and multitasking grid menu felt less like a siloed app switcher and more like a multi-window-friendly computer. That’s important for the growing number of people who use their iPad Pro as a laptop replacement.

Drag and drop apps right into split-screen view

You can also drag and drop photos and hyperlinks across split-screen apps

iOS 11 problems

The first iOS 11 problems emerged on launch day, but really, they’ve existed in the beta, too. We’re just seeing more people experience (and complain about) the bugs now.

Besides the usual battery drain issues and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth troubles, people we noticing that Control Center won’t disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth from the quick settings toggles.

Instead, you have navigate to the normal settings menu. Control Center simply disconnects you from your current Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections. That’s helpful-ish, but not properly labeled.

Drag and drop comes to the iPad

Drag and Drop also debuts on iOS 11, and instantly launches apps in split-screen mode when you drag them to the side of the screen.

You can also transport items across a split screen: text, photos, hyperlinks, files, and so on. This – not the iMac Pro – is Apple’s answer to a touchscreen computer.

iOS 11 makes the iPad feel more like a laptop than merely a super-sized iPhone, and it’s something that no Android tablet, not even the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, offers today.

Drag and Drop for iPhone may be a possibility in the future.

TechRadar’s take: Drag and drop removes several unnecessary steps when using an iPad for productivity purposes. In our testing, we were relieved to no longer be forced to copy and then paste simple text and photos between a split-screen menu. It’s all right there. For the last two years we’ve thought you should be able to drag and drop. Now you can.

iOS 11 features hint at iPhone 8 AR

iOS 11 just gave Apple the largest AR platform in the world – overnight, thanks to so many iPhones and iPads bing out there. It’s an instant boon for augmented reality fans and developers alike.

That’s why the developer-focused Apple ARKit is a big deal for everyone, not just app makers. Get ready for a futuristic life in augmented reality.

The App Store is currently being filled with AR games and software tools. We downloaded a fun game called Flat Pack and used an IKEA app to place furniture in a tiny, tiny New York City apartment bedroom (nothing fit, it turns out).

Developers will continue to create AR apps, overlaying virtual objects on the real world using your iPhone or iPad and its camera. It’s like a really advanced version of Pokemon Go, but with many more possibilities.

Apple just created a new playground for millions of existing devices, and put the Microsoft Hololens and Google Tango on notice.

TechRadar’s take: The AR apps in the App Store right now are mostly filled with “extra AR levels.” That said, we’re very hopeful for Apple’s big AR push given how many iOS devices there are out there. It’ll take a bit of time to flesh out this idea.

iOS 11 puts Apple Pencil to the test

The Apple Pencil is a great little tool for the iPad Pro series, but our one complaint in our iPad Pro 9.7 review was that you can’t use it everywhere you’d like to in apps.

That all changes with iOS 11. Instant Markup lets you draw on PDFs and photos, while Instant Notes lets you jot things down ASAP – right from the lock screen.

All of your Instant Notes on the lock screen are saved in Notes, so don’t worry. And drawing on Notes near existing text cleverly now moves the text out of the way.

Take notes, even from the lock screen. It saves in Notes, don’t worry

Scan and sign documents without the need for a multi-function printer

Document Scanner in Notes does away with the need to painstakingly scan important documents that you need to sign.

It scans, crops edges, removes tilt and glare and lets you fill in the blanks or sign away with an Apple Pencil.

TechRadar’s take: This is another significant update for the iPad Pro series. We’re not saying the Apple Pencil was useless, but the scenarios for it were very limited (hello, artists). Now, iOS 11 makes it a productivity tool, and it goes hand-in-hand with the wizardry of Apple’s document scan.

New iPad keyboard shortcuts

Apple is making a big productivity push with the iPad Pro 10.5-inch, and iOS 11 is doing its part with tweaked keyboard shortcuts.

You won’t have to switch to the second keyboard layer any more

It combines letter keys with numbers, symbols and punctuation marks (currently found on the second keyboard layer), letting you access them with a new flicking gesture.

Flicking these secondary numbers and symbols downward is easier than having to switch back and forth between the two layers. We kind of wish it were coming to the iPhone 7 Plus, too.

TechRadar’s take: This is one of the smallest iOS 11 changes, but also one of the most important. Not having to flip back and forth between keyboard layers saves you a step, which results in about half a second of saved time. Add them up over the course of the day, and you’ve got more time on your hands and a less stressful means of typing out a real email that’s longer than one line. We really like this new iOS 11 feature.

Apple Files opens up your many clouds

Apple is debuting a new Files app in iOS 11 that lets you sort through all of your files. Your can browse, search and organize them all in one place.

Apple Files not only has recent files from your iPad, but on other iOS devices, in iCloud Drive and from other services, including Box, Google Drive and Dropbox.

It’s just one more way Apple is trying to make the iPad Pro a de facto computer for people who don’t need a MacBook 2017 or iMac Pro.

TechRadar’s take: This move, like announcing the Apple Pencil two years ago, goes against what we expected from the company. However, it’s a welcome change with iOS 11. You may not use files right away, but as you rely on the new remote document and photo repository more and more, it’ll become essential to your device.

iMessages won’t take up your storage anymore

iOS 11 makes iMessages even better than it already is with seamless iCloud syncing across your iPhone, iPad and Mac.

That means two things. First, when you delete a conversation bubble on an iPad, it’ll also disappear on your iPhone and MacBook Pro. Great.

Second, it frees up all of your iMessage storage, a real problem for rabid texters who have been with Apple since iMessage first launched.

Whether or not you know it, iMessages take up a bunch of space in your iPhone and iPad. It’s all of that ‘Other’ storage in yellow if you ever look in iTunes.

Soon, with iOS 11, you’ll be able to back up all of your iMessages to iCloud as they get archived to Apple’s secure internet servers. That’s a big relief.

TechRadar’s take: The fact that iOS 11 syncs iMessages between devices via iCloud is a bigger change than all of the cosmetic, sticker-filled additions we got with iOS 10. Why? Because even though it’s a great texting app, especially since you can message people on a Mac and iPad (something that’s not easy to do natively on Android), messages can get out of order or remain on your other devices once you delete them. The fact that it frees up a lot of storage from the yellow ‘Other’ mystery bar is a bonus.

Apple Pay payments to friends

Apple Pay is expanding to include person-to-person payment features when you upgrade to iOS 11. It’s exactly what Venmo and PayPal do right now, but via an app-free solution.

Apple Pay payments use Touch ID (or Face ID) for authentication and iMessages to send payments between friends or other contacts who owe you money.

With so many contactless payment options on iOS right now, including Gmail and Facebook, there’s no reason to avoid paying back your friends.

Plus it has the enhancement of being able to use Apple Pay Cash right away via any terminal that accepts Apple Pay. This means you won’t have to wait for the money your friends give you to be deposited in your bank account.

TechRadar’s take: This is Apple’s me-too attempt to expand Apple Pay into a Venmo rival, and it’s overall a good thing. Whether or not most users will get a lot of use out of it remains to be seen. It’s hard to drive awareness to this new iOS 11 feature, even if it can be handy in everyday life with friends.

Just a note: Apple Pay Cash isn’t launching right away. You’ll have to until a very likely iOS 11.1 before that happens.

Welcome to the new App Store

We didn’t get an iTunes refresh at WWDC 2017, but iOS 11 is giving us a brand new App Store on the iPhone and iPad.

The Today tab leads things off by refreshing its app picks daily and telling stories behind the top apps. The format feels very much like what Apple did in Music last year.

Don’t worry, every app will still have a product page, but iOS 11 is putting a lot of focus on the new ‘Games’ and ‘Apps’ tabs to spotlight the best in those areas.

Apple says the new App Store on your mobile devices is ‘designed for discovery’ and is a way to make app downloading exciting again, like it was nine years ago.

TechRadar take: We’ve looked around the new App Store on iOS 11 and like what we see for the most part. The updates tab isn’t as streamlined due to more white space among menus and larger text that spans more lines than before, but everywhere else there is of benefit. It’s about time things changed for this app.

Siri is smarter and sounds different

Siri is getting a more natural-sounding voice with the iOS 11 update, and you’re able to pick between female and male voice options.

To make Siri sound like an AI from the future, Apple gave it a way to say the same word with different tones. It’s not always the same robot-like pronunciation.

Siri is boosting its contextual learning, too, going as far as surfacing different word suggestions after you read a specific news story in Apple News or Safari.

Did you just read some news about Iceland and are starting to type in a word like Reykjavik? Let Siri finish up that forthcoming typo of yours.

Siri is on 375 million devices, and is in more languages and more countries than any other personal assistant. So Apple is taking advantage of that with iOS 11.

It uses deep learning for quick translations like we haven’t seen before. Want to order an authentic dish in Chinese? Just have Siri say it for you.

TechRadar’s tech: The iOS 11 proves that Siri isn’t just smarter, but sounds more human in this version of the operating system. In addition to being more useful and competing with Google Assistant and Alexa, it’s nice to see Siri sound less like a robot.

iOS 11 revamps Control Center

iOS 11 gives Control Center a complete overhaul with an all-in-one look to put quick controls at your fingertips – without having to swipe between menus.

Everything is combined now: system controls, app shortcuts and music controls. Just pull up from the bottom of the screen and there they are.

It’s a lot different than before, so the design will force you to get used to the new arrangement (you’ll probably hate it on day one, love it on day two). Of course, it’ll be easier and faster once it becomes second nature.

You’ll also be able to disable Control Center in apps. This is helpful for games where swiping up may be a means to control on-screen characters or maps.

TechRadar’s take: Don’t let Control Center’s unrefined, button-filled looks fool you. It’s a great new addition to the iOS 11 feature list. We’ve been asking for custom shortcuts in this menu since it first launched, and now we finally have them (at least for a lot of first-party apps and settings).

It still doesn’t have a fast way to change up or connect to new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals – you’ll need to go to the settings app for that. But everything else is a step in the right direction compared to the multi-pane Control Center from years past.

Lock screen and notification center are now one

Lock screen notifications and notification center are joining forces in iOS 11, and that makes it easier to see which older alerts you’ve missed.

Swiping up on the normal lock screen will display notifications from earlier in the day, essentially giving you access to notification center from the lock screen.

Meanwhile, the usual notification center gesture (swipe down from the top of your iPhone) brings up the new lock screen/notification center menu.

TechRadar’s take: Remember how getting rid of slide to unlock in favor of using the Touch ID button really threw you in last year’s update (and many people disabled the press down means of lock screen entry)? This is on the same level. It takes some time to get used to.

It’s helpful, but we’re used to swiping notifications left or right on the home screen, which now leads to the Today menu or the camera app, even if you’re overtop of a notification. This requires more of a muscle memory retraining than anything else.

New camera modes and photo storage

The iOS 11 camera app debuts new modes that further chip away at the need to always bring a high-end DSLR with you. It’s that advanced.

Apple’s Live Photos take on Instagram’s Loop app with its own Loop and Bounce options. Either play them in a loop or have them rock back and forth endlessly.

Long exposures are going to let you capture still photos with proper motion blur. Think: waterfalls, car traffic tail lights, stars moving across the night sky.

New filters are also coming to iOS 11, with Apple promising that portrait photos will be expressive and skin tones more natural in the end.

It’s also changing the way we store videos and photos with new standards, HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) and HEVC (High Efficiency Video Codec).

The good news here is that these next-generation compression technologies won’t take up nearly as much storage – and you’ll never even notice.

TechRadar’s take: Live Photos have been fun, but they’re never perfect, especially if you have a cool motion photo that ends with you pointing your camera down toward the ground because you thought the moving photo would have stopped recording by then. Now you can trim them and loop them for better effects.

Driving without distraction thanks to iOS 11

You shouldn’t be driving and texting anyway, but Apple is literally driving that point home with a new Do Not Disturb While Driving feature in iOS 11.

It’ll shut off notifications just like Do Not Disturb, but do so automatically if you are behind the wheel. Apple concedes not everyone has Apple CarPlay just yet, which it argues is a safer, hands-free solution.

But this feature allows you to drive safely without it. It will even shoot a text over to those who try to contact you with a message saying that you will get back to them shortly.

What if you’re just a law-abiding passenger? It’s easy to confirm that, so you can continue to ignore the driver by looking at important cat GIFs on your iPhone.

What if you really need to get in contact with someone? You can enter the word “urgent” to break through the Do No Disturb feature.

TechRadar’s take: We have already found this useful driving in our car. It turns on automatically and asks us if we’re the one driving, just in case we’re not. You do have an out as a passenger. We also found there’s an automatic text reply that can optionally be sent to anyone who messages you while you’re driving. Another step-saving iOS 11 improvement.

Apple Maps goes indoors, adds lane assist

One less distraction comes with Maps, which is getter smarter on the road and even indoors as of the iOS 11 update.

Lane assist and speed limits are coming to Apple Maps, which is handy for safe driving in all ways. Maps has come a long way since its disastrous inception.

And while Apple isn’t done improving Apps outdoors, it’s going indoors, too with detailed maps of hundreds of airports and malls around the world.

This is the future: finding out which restaurants are past security at LAX or which stores are on level three of the multi-story mall is possible with iOS 11.

TechRadar’s take: Apple Maps has only become reliable in the last year, and it’s starting to give Google some competition with these new features. It’s playing catch-up with lane assist, but we’re intrigued by the possibilities of indoor mapping. That’s not really a thing other mapping apps do, never mind Apple Maps

Your music just got better with iOS 11

Apple is expanding its already leading presence in Smart Home control with new iOS 11 multi-speaker controls and further tweaking the Apple Music design.

This is great news ahead of the Apple HomePod launch.

AirPlay 2 will let you control several speakers throughout your house with a new Apple Home menu. Everything can be in sync on all of your home speakers.

Apple Music is getting equally exciting changes. You’ll be able to amass better playlists by consulting with your friends – without ever having to ask them thanks to shared playlists, albums and stations.

Siri is getting in on music curation, too, with Apple promising that as of iOS 11, its virtual assistant knows sounds you love and can answer band trivia.

TechRadar’s take: Multi-room audio, whether or not you have Apple’s new speaker, is a great addition to iOS 11. it remains to be seen, however, if your existing speaker will be able to upgrade to support Apple’s AirPlay 2 standard. Everything else about the Music app changes we like, especially the ability to curate playlists based on what friends are listening to.

Which iPhones are compatible with iOS 11

Apple has limited its iOS 11 update to phones that run the 64-bit chipset, first introduced with the iPhone 5S, meaning all iPhones before this with a 32-bit processor won’t get the update. The same goes for older apps that haven’t been updated for the faster chipset. They just won’t work.

Which iPads are compatible with iOS 11?

When it comes to iOS 11, the iPad mini 2, mini 3, and mini 4 are still holding it, even though Apple hasn’t made a new iPad mini in several years. All four iPad Pro sizes are compatible with iOS 11, too, as are the two iPad Air tablets.

When is Cyber Monday 2017? What does it end?

Cyber Monday is right now. It just started and won’t end until midnight on Tuesday. The problem with that? The best deals will either expire or sell out much sooner than you think. We’ll update this page new deals develop.

Cyber Monday 2017 is November 27 this year. If you couldn’t tell, that date is a Monday. It’s always the Monday after Thanksgiving, which is also always the Monday after Black Friday.

The concept of Cyber Monday itself is newer the term “Cyber Monday” was first coined in 2004, but since then has become a huge deal on its own, expanding outside of its US origins.

The weekend of Cyber Monday isn’t just significant for sales – it also represents the beginning of the holiday shopping season. It usually helps to have some idea of your holiday shopping lists before the weekend so you can take full advantage of all the sales at your disposal.

However, deals come in hot and fast on Cyber Monday, and you’ll no doubt find great savings on tech and other items you didn’t even know you wanted.

Cyber Monday 2017 predictions

Now that you have an idea of what’s already on offer, you can probably imagine the amazing deals that will be available this year. From the latest phones to smart home devices to speakers and more, here are the best Cyber Monday 2017 deals we expect to see.

iPhone 8 and iPhone X deals
We can expect Cyber Monday 2017 to do for the iPhone 8 and iPhone X what Cyber Monday 2016 did for the iPhone 7. From mobile carriers offering BOGO deals or credits for installment plans to retailers chopping the price and tossing in freebies, there may not be a better time to buy the iPhone 8 or iPhone X. If you do see a sale, don’t expect it to last long.

Apple Watch 3 deals
The iPhone 8 and iPhone X weren’t the only big announcements Apple had for us in September. It also introduced the Apple Watch 3, the first iteration to feature its own cellular connection. With a price tag of $399, getting to feel like Dick Tracy doesn’t come cheap. But you can rest assured that Cyber Monday 2017 will offer up discounts or deals to make the new smartwatch a far more compelling buy.

Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 deals
Android users won’t be left in the dark when Cyber Monday 2017 rolls around. Samsung already has shown the kinds of killer deals it’s willing to offer on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note, and those weren’t even during Cyber Monday. Expect big discounts, especially on the Galaxy S8, and free mobile accessories thrown in.

PS4 Pro deals
The latest and greatest version of Sony’s PlayStation is the PS4 Pro, and it’s expected to feature heavily in Cyber Monday 2017 sales. In fact, we’re all but sure it will be since during Cyber Monday 2016, we saw a ton of deals for its predecessor, the PS4 Slim. Most notably, PS4 Pro Cyber Monday deals will include can’t-miss bundles, complete with controllers, accessories, and games.

Xbox One X deals
The Xbox One has undergone a transformation; Microsoft’s so-called Project Scorpio has been revealed as the Xbox One X, and it’s quite a console. Not only does it feature full 4K gaming, but it also already has a massive 22 games to play, including titles like Forza 7, Anthem, and more. At launch, the Xbox One X price is $500, but you can expect it to be a lot cheaper and bundled during Cyber Monday 2017.

Nintendo Switch deals
A bigger focus will be placed on Nintendo this year as the company has finally unveiled the Nintendo Switch console. The Switch features a ton of great games, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but by the time Cyber Monday rolls around you can bet there will be a lot more ready to play, including Super Mario Odyssey. Expect some serious Nintendo Switch deals this year. The SNES Classic will likely pop up in deals as well, but you should expect it to go quick.

Everything with Amazon’s Alexa smart assistant
Amazon loves putting its line of inexpensive Fire tablets on sale, and it has frequently dropped the price of its Echo and Echo Dot devices, all of which feature Amazon’s digital assistant, Alexa. And given Amazon’s dominance of the online market place, you can safely bet that it’s going to put its products front and center on Cyber Monday 2017 with hot deals that make them hard to resist.

4K TV deals
Cyber Monday have traditionally been great times to buy TVs, and this year will be no different. From LG to Samsung to Toshiba, expect massive deals on the best TV technology. You’ll get huge discounts on 4K TVs, as well as lower-resolution TVs such as 1080p screens, so no matter how much you’re willing to spend there should be a TV set for you.

Camera deals
Cameras may not be as heavily featured as TVs on Cyber Monday, but that doesn’t mean they don’t see solid savings later in the year. DSLR cameras from the likes of Nikon and Canon, as well as GoPro cameras, will all get eye-catching discounts, namely through retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and more.

Laptop deals
If you’re looking for a new daily driver in terms of a computer, then Cyber Monday is a great time to go shopping. As we mentioned, last year there were lots of discounts on gaming laptops, but whether you’re into gaming or not you’ll be able to get a laptop for much cheaper than you otherwise would. That includes discounts on Apple’s range of MacBooks, including the MacBook Pro, standard MacBook, and more.

Headphone deals
From Beats to AKG, there are sure to be plenty of sweet savings on headphones. This year, the so-called “true wireless” form factor is a little more popular, so it’s expected we’ll see discounts on those headphones from the likes of Apple and Samsung. If you’re more into over-ear and on-ear headphones, you’ll still get access to plenty of discounts, so keep an eye on Amazon for those.

Cyber Monday 2017 FAQ

What is Cyber Monday?
Cyber Monday is the biggest day for online deals of the year. It’s the Monday immediately after Thanksgiving, and the day when retailers shift their attention away from sales in-store and towards sales online.

When is Cyber Monday?
This year, Cyber Monday falls on November 27. Black Friday is on November 24, and that’s the day after Thanksgiving, which is on November 23. Some deals may start at specific times on the day.

Where are the best Cyber Monday deals?
Cyber Monday deals happen all over the web, but the best place to stay on top of them is, of course, right here on TechRadar. We’ll be updating this page with new deals as we find them, and we’ll tell you whether the discounts are really worth it or if you should keep looking.

How do I get the best Cyber Monday deals?
There are plenty of things to keep in mind when you’re shopping for new deals. For starters, it’s best to make a list of things you actually want so you can avoid falling into sales traps during the day and buying products that give you buyer’s remorse. It’s also a good idea to note beforehand how much you’re willing to spend as it’s easy to spend more than you otherwise might.

How do I stay safe while buying things on Cyber Monday?
We recommend always buying from companies that you know are legit. The likes of Amazon, Best Buy, B&H Photo Video, Walmart, Target and other big names like these are your best bet for safety online, but even then it’s a good idea to look into things like return policies.

Be very wary of phishing emails as these can be a big source of income for scammers during this busy shopping season. In fact, even if an email does appear legitimate we recommend going straight to the website offering the products rather than clicking on links in emails.

The best cheap Apple Watch deals on Cyber Monday 2017

The best cheap Apple Watch deals on Cyber Monday 2017

Apple Watch deals have arrived just in time for Black Friday 2017, and here’s our best tip: you can save money on the Apple Watch 2 over the new Apple Watch 3 version with LTE. The older models are surprisingly affordable now.

Finding an Apple Watch price drop isn’t easy, however. The good news is that we’re here to help you avoid paying full price for an Apple Watch 2 or whatever smartwatch you want to attach to your wrist. It all depends on where you shop.

Yes, the Apple Watch 3 is the best Apple Watch you can buy today; however, the refreshed Apple Watch Series 1 or 2 and older original Apple Watch are just as good for most people. Make sure you pick wisely.

28% off Apple Watch 2
This is the Apple Watch deal we like the most in the US. It’s for the Apple Watch Series 2, and you won’t even notice that’s it’s listed as factory refurbished with its “looks and feels new” tag.View Deal

Here’s a list of the best Apple Watch deals for November 2017, from the first version to the latest. We also threw in a few places to buy cheap Apple Watch bands at a discount that are cheap compared to the one Apple will sell you on.

Apple Watch Series 3

A modest upgrade

OS: watchOS 4 | Compatibility: iOS | Display: 1.65″ OLED | Processor: S3 dual-core | Onboard storage: 8GB | Battery: 18 hours | Charging method: Wireless | IP rating: IPX7 | Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS Cellular

Now has an altimeter
Cellular options
More expensive versions have cellular features
Series 2 is arguably better value

The new regular Apple Watch 3 and Apple Watch 3 LTE delivers a really minimal upgrade, unliked the new iPhone X. The latter version essentially just adds in connectivity to its latest wearable. This basic Series 3 model though can only be called an incremental upgrade over the Apple Watch 2.

If you’re not that bothered about being connected wherever you are – or don’t want to pay extra for the capability – you might want to look at the older Apple Watch Series 2 deals below and save yourself some money.

Apple Watch 2 deals

Fitness takes over the Apple Watch

OS: watchOS 3 | Compatibility: iOS | Display: 1.53″ OLED | Processor: S2 dual-core | Onboard storage: 8GB (only 2GB and 75MB allowed for music and photos, respectively) | Battery: 18 hours | Charging method: Wireless | IP rating: IPX7 | Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC

Water-resistant
GPS onboard
Lack of useful apps

The Apple Watch 2 is the most expensive iPhone-compatible smartwatch you can own, and for good reason. It includes specs and features not available for the cheaper Apple Watch Series 1. This includes GPS tracking, a brighter screen and waterproof specs that allow you to wear it in the pool. All of that sounds great, until you see the expensive price tag, especially for the Ceramic Apple Watch 2. Aluminum cases make for the cheapest Apple Watch 2, followed by stainless steel and ceramic. There’s no gold model any more, but more intricate Apple Watch bands do lead to higher prices. In other words, you have to shop smartly when picking out your Apple Watch 2 below.

Apple Watch Nike Plus deals

The Nike-flavored Apple Watch 2

OS: watchOS 3 | Compatibility: iOS | Display: 1.53″ OLED | Processor: S2 dual-core | Onboard storage: 8GB (only 2GB and 75MB allowed for music and photos, respectively) | Battery: 18 hours | Charging method: Wireless | IP rating: water-resistant IPX7 | Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC

Water-resistant
GPS onboard
Limited fitness app
Not always accurate

The Apple Watch Nike Plus Edition is actually the newest Apple Watch 2, one that’s dressed in sporty colors like neon green along its perforated Sport Band. It’s brilliant looking. Yes, you can now buy the Apple Watch Nike Plus Edition bands separately, but you can’t get the exclusive Nike running watch faces. The problem is this smartwatch is just as expensive as the Apple Watch 2 and less likely to see a price drop right away. Apple and Nike, after all, launched it a month after the Watch 2. There are places in which you can find a cheap Apple Watch Nike Plus, and places like Amazon that have third-party retailers jacking up the price on this sought-after Nike Apple Watch. Be careful out there.

Apple Series 1 deals

The best Apple Watch for most non-runners

OS: watchOS 3 | Compatibility: iOS | Display: 1.53″ OLED | Processor: S1P dual-core | Onboard storage: 8GB (only 2GB and 75MB allowed for music and photos, respectively) | Battery: 18 hours | Charging method: Wireless | IP rating: splash-proof | Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC

The best Apple Watch for most people
Faster performance than Apple Watch 1
Lacks Series 2’s bright screen
No GPS and not waterproof

The Apple Watch Series 1 is actually the best Apple Watch for most people who aren’t all-star runners and avid swimmers. It has most of the specs you need on a smartwatch. This is a refreshed Apple Watch compared to the original Apple Watch, so it has a faster dual-core processor and better battery life as a result. It runs all the same watchOS 3 software (and will be upgraded to WatchOS 4 this fall). Best of all, the much cheaper Apple Watch Series 1 price doesn’t leave out a whole lot. If you don’t need to track GPS runs and swim with it on, you’ll save money. The discounted Apple Watch Series 1 still comes in two sizes, 38mm and 42mm, but only has the more economical an aluminum case and Sport band. It’s the best Apple Watch value.

Original Apple Watch deals

The iPhone-tailored smartwatch merely a convenient gadget

OS: watchOS 3 | Compatibility: iOS | Display: 1.53″ OLED | Processor: S1 System-in-Package (SiP) | Band sizes: Varies drastically per style | Onboard storage: 8GB (only 2GB and 75MB allowed for music and photos, respectively) | Battery: 18 hours | Charging method: Wireless | IP rating: IPX7 | Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC

Cheapest Apple Watch now
Include heart-rate monitor
Noticeably slower performance
Battery life is one (waking) day

The cheapest Apple Watch on sale today is the original iWatch, the company’s first smartwatch that came out in April 2015. No, the Apple Store doesn’t sell this price-reduced Apple Watch 1 anymore, but there are plenty of retailers still hawking the original Apple Watch at a discount. The best part – besides the cheap Apple Watch 1 price – is the fact that it runs watchOS 3 with all the same apps as an Apple Watch 2. It’s a vast improvement over the launch software.

Apple Watch band/strap deals

Bands are not one-size-fits-all-budgets

Wide variety of sizes, colors and prices
Incredibly easy to slide onto your Watch
Can’t use normal watch straps
Official Apple Watch bands are pricey

Your Apple Watch literally isn’t complete without the best deals on Apple Watch bands. They make the geeky smartwatch stylish enough to show off to late adopters.

In fact, you’re going to want multiple cheap Apple Watch straps simply because more elegant bands are far from ideal for the gym. Vice versa, Sport Bands don’t cut it at the fancy dinner table.

Everyday in the news, we see new cheap Apple Watch bands trying to become the de facto alternative to the more expensive, official Apple Watch bands, and they’re usually just as good. Trust us, buying a trio of third-party, lookalike Apple Watch bands for the price of one official strap is a relief after paying so much for the smartwatch itself. Plus, you’ll want to save up for the eventually Apple Watch 3.

The best stores for Black Friday deals

Amazon

Amazon has our favorite online deals every Black Friday in the US, and that’s just because it sells so many different items, and does so very cheaply in November. And November 2017 looks to be no different. It specializes in video game system bundles, so look for very cheap PS4 Slim and Xbox One S consoles. Sometimes it’s a price drop, sometimes it’s an extra game or controller packed in, and rarely it’s both. We’ll keep you updated on our Amazon Black Friday deals page.

Jet already has its Black Friday preview updated, and it’s selling everything from the smaller Google Mini speaker with Google Assistant built in, to the new Playskool Tickle Me Elmo doll. Want a brand new 49-inch Samsung TV for under $650. There’s a bargain here for you today, and there’s way more where that came from, according to the Jet Black Friday early preview page.

Walmart

Walmart sells a little bit of everything, and because of its size, it’s willingly to offer deep Black Friday discounts, or what it calls “rollback prices.” That means you can get deals on everything from a new Apple iPhone to the latest must-have toys for kids in one quick shopping spree. We’ve highlighted some of this very deals below and on our Walmart Black Friday page.

Toys R Us

We have some good news and some bad news about Toys R Us. First the bad news is that the kid-focused retailer filed for bankruptcy in September. The good news, for you at least, is that it may be willing to offer massive discounts on everything from bikes to LEGOs to attract buyers. You can smell the discounts (and the desperation) over on our Toys R Us Black Friday deals list.

Newegg

Some of the best computer deals can be found at Newegg, where the retailer sells fully built laptops and desktops for cheaper than almost any other US store. It also specializes in components if you’re looking to build your own PC. And, of course, it has accessories on sale. Basically, any nerdy gadget you can think of is on our Newegg Black Friday deals page.

Target

If there’s one thing Target is known for on Black Friday, it’s offering some of the best prices on Apple products, especially the iPad. Right now eBay has the best discount on an iPad Pro, but we’re keeping a watchful eye on other tech discounts from this big US retail chain where more often than not, you walk in needing to buy one thing and walk out with a shopping cart full of stuff. Only a few more days to go on our Target Black Friday deals list.

eBay

We keep telling people every Black Friday that eBay is for more than just auctions. It often has the lowest prices on electronics throughout the holiday shopping season. 2017 will be no different, which is why you should pay close attention to our best ebay Black Friday deals page.

Best cheap Samsung Galaxy S8 deals in the US for November 2017

Best cheap Samsung Galaxy S8 deals in the US for November 2017

The Samsung Galaxy S8 deals are finally making our top smartphone pick more affordable in November than when it first launched eight months ago.

That’s because Samsung and carriers like Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile have been discounting the Android phone, and you can even get an unlocked version through online retailers like Amazon, Newegg and Samsung’s own website.

Some of the best deals on Samsung’s flagship Galaxy phone come from AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and even Verizon through Buy One Get One Free deals.

There are also offers on new smartphone plan sign-ups, like paying for your Early Termination Fees or offering trade-in deals for your old smartphone.

How do you get the best Galaxy S8 price? We’ll fill you in on the tips to paying the lowest amount for this still-stellar curvy smartphone.

The best Samsung Galaxy S8 deals

Without a deal, the Galaxy S8 launch price has been locked at $750 for the 64GB base model, but don’t overpay now that the phone is more than six months old.

$150 off the Galaxy S8 through NewEgg is the best deal for Samsung’s 2017 flagship smartphone. It costs $599, and is an unlocked edition of the phone. It also features a slot for two SIM cards, which is really handy if you’re traveling internationally. You can’t find that in normal US stores on the Galaxy S8.

Samsung has cheap Galaxy S8 for $424.99 with a phone trade-in if you happen to have a working Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. That’s a really good deal if you want to upgrade from last year’s best phone to this year’s. Or without a trade in, an unlocked model sells for $724.99, beating carrier prices.

AT&T has a buy-one-get-one Galaxy S8 deal if both devices are bought on AT&T Next with a qualifying wireless plan and DirecTV service. It also offers up-to $200 in trade-in value or a free Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch if the BOGO deal isn’t to your liking.

T-Mobile will throw in a Galaxy Tab E for free with the purchase of a new Galaxy S8, but that will be at the full price of $750, even if it’s on an installment plan.

Sprint is offering low monthly payments and the option to upgrade to a new phone after 12 monthly payments, but the phone will still cost a full $750 for people who want to keep instead of trading in when a new Galaxy phone comes out.

Verizon has no deal prices on the Galaxy S8, though it offers installment plans if paying full price upfront isn’t an option.

Amazon’s deal also has the option of throwing in a Samsung Fast Charge wireless charging stand that would normally cost $89. But, in the bundle, the stand only adds $48.

To see if there are other deals from carriers we haven’t mentioned above, see the list below.
